Nachdem S.O.S. schon in BOOT MURDER NEWS #3 mit dabei waren und das Hauptmanko der schlechte Sound war, haben sie sich mittlerweile in ein Studio begeben und ihr 4. Demo eingespielt. Und überraschender Weise ist mit dem Sound auch der Sänger besser geworden. Allgemein ist zu bemerken, dass sie ihrem Stil, dem Hardcore treu geblieben sind. S.O.S. entwickeln sich langsam aber sich er zu einer ernstzunehmenden Nachwuchsband in Sachen HC aus Deutschland. Über 35. min lang bieten sie auf 13 Songs verteilt das neue Material. Eine absolute Augenweide ist noch das auf Hochglanzpapier gedruckte s/w Cover, auf dem zwei nackte Frauen…? Na, neugierig geworden? Dann bestellt das Tape so schnell es geht.

Sick of Society from Germany sent me both recordings of their upcoming CD „Silicon Valley“ and their fourth demotape „Love?!”. I don´t like the recordings of their CD much, cause the music is trendy mixture of hardcore and metal with irritating vocals. But their demo “Love?!” ist really worth to listen, cause it´s an interessting combination of death, trash and Hardcore. Also the vocals vary from nromal shouts to deep grunts. By the way, on their CD is an additional vocal appereance by some members of Fleshcrawl.

Even though this is called a demo tape, you couldeasily be forgiven for calling this an album. There are thirteen songs altogether, the production is top notch, and the packaging is very professional. Then there´s the music: high energy, well writen, catchy... why aren´t these guys signed yet? There´s some thrash, some rap (a la ANTHRAX´s “ I´m The Man”), some seventies television background music (funky, you know the stuff they played when Starsky & Hutch were in chase scene?), some atmospheric stuff, some death metal and various other sounds and styles all combined into one tatally complex but confusing album (oops! I meant to say demo). You can also still get their “Bitch” demo which ist well worth it as well.

This demo is their the best. I like their 3rd demo entitled “Bitch”, but “Love!?” is better. O.K. - What do they play now? I think that their music have different opinions. In one side,”trendy shit”, in second side”good experimental music”. I agree with words ”good experimental music”. They play very popular american music (you know, the mix of thrash-hardcore-rap) with pure death metal influences. The vocals, drums, guitars are death!!! Long time ago, The Beatles sung “ Can´t Buy My Love”, but I think that you can do it for only 7$.

When I reviewed SOS´s last tape I said they should concentrate more on one style. It sounds like they are doing the exact opposite here. Some of it is punk rock and some of it is death metal (just to mention some of styles). Some of it sounds good and some doesn´t! The production is much better than their last demo and their songwriting abilities also improved, but...

Oliver war auch so nett, mir neben der geilen Silicon Valley CD noch ihr schon etwas älteres Love?! Demo zu überspielen. Leider fehlen mir die letzten zwei Songs… Naja, macht ja nix! Auch hier wurschtelt man sich mit verdammt viel Energie durch sämtliche Genres der extremen Hartwurstmucke (Hardcore, Thrash, Death) und, versucht diese trotz aller simplen Brachialität interessant zu gestallten. [Fear of Life Mag No.4 Netherlands ]
With their “Bitch”-demo, released in ´94, Sick of Society left behind the impression of being a band with original idea´s but not the abilities to work those idea´s up in coherent, well structured music. On this point Sick of Society clearly improved on their “Love!?”-demo, their 4th release. The thirteen songs are still a mix of all kinds of styles; as basis thrash, mixed with death, funk, hardcore, rap, punk, etc... Those styles are mixed in pretty good songs, which are not compareable to any other band. The vocals mostly are understandable, sometimes also grunting. The understandable vocals sounds a bit forced, they could be better. A nice demo, only for open minded ones. Comes with large, pro, printed inlay.

YEAH!!! This guys are really sick of society. This ist their fourth demo with very good sound production. It conains 9 new songs and 4 rerecorded versions from older demos BITCH an QUESTION OF A MANKIND. I´d say guys found their original style and they could be described as fast trash/core with elements of rock and heavy metal. Real mixture of cool Stuff Great vocals with lots of screamy parts and even growls at some songs. And there is also Song Korea (it´s a drink made out of Coke and red wine). My personaly favourite song os CONTEMPT. Check the guys out they really cool and for fun too. Order their demo or suck my dick!

Flashback! 1988, Metallica rules the metal kingdom. This four peace band from Germany certainly mean well from the glossy pronographic (taht´s right guys) cover to its decently recorded tape. But, I just couldn´t get into these guys. The singer sounds a litlle too much like the guy from Sacred Reich. The music ist thrash, slighly bordering on death metal and is heavily influenced by Pantera / Metallica. The lyrics, nothing special. If you´re still into the 80´s thing, pick this up. If not, continue on down the food chain to find something esle a little more tasty.

Das interessante Cover-Artwork von “Love!?”, dem neuesten Werk von Sick of Society, sticht angenehm ins Auge. Musikalisch agieren die Jungs aggressiv und straight, wobei man auf Hardcore-Einflüsse ebenso wenig verzichtet wie auf funkige Passagen und würende, direkte Thrashauswüchse. Ihr seht schon, Sick of Society sind eine variable Band, die sich in kein Schema drängen lassen, jedoch ausschließlich für Leute genießbar sind, die harter, rhythmischer Mucke nicht abgeneigt sind.

The german quartet are back with another hefty tape of thirteen songs, a few of which appeared on last years´s “Bitch” demo (reviewed last issue). Once again produced by Fleshcrawl´s Bastian Herzog, this is a pretty good sounding representation, especially when considering it was done on an 8 Track. Overall, their performance and direction are improved over their last tape but S.O.S. are still all over the place. Granted, they have sort of found their angle by toning down the death metal and hardcore aspects of the new tape and winding up somewhere in between with some up-tempo thrash styled songs that contain punk sensebilities, a few erratic parts and humor now and then. Definitely a better presentation but the band needs to concentrate on fewer songs of a higher caliber.

Die Jungs waren schon im letzten I.P. und sofort kam ihr viertes Demo eingeflogen. Diesmal hat man sich entschlossen, es nicht in Eigenregie aufzunehmen und zog sich Bastian von FLESHCRAWL ans Pult. Immerhin macht man damit soundtechnisch einen gewaltigen Satz nach vorn, obwohl natürlich noch immer nicht alles optimal ist. Für „Love!?“, so der Titel, hat man sich ein verkaufsförderndes Cover zugelegt (Hey, sind das Euro Groupies, dann kommt mal in Berlin vorbei), aber lasst Euch überraschen. Musikalisch geht die Band ihren schon auf dem Vorgänger dokumentierten Weg weiter.

Their 4th demo is much the same as was to be heard an “Bitch”. But they don´t make a trial of so many styles. Only rough Thrash / HC was left with deathly rattlesat times. Otherwise harsh and Punk-like singing voices give variety to the songs. Musically, they improved greatly. Clever and quick drum work, rythmical guitars, excrucaiting bass. In my opinion the sound is a little bit fuller but the drums are still overloud. Printed j-card, strange cover (Eure Freundinnen? Schöne Mädels...) 13 songs, 4 of them are rerecorded from the older demos. Good work,guys! Dit is alweer de vierde demoa van deze Duitsers di in´91begonnen onder de naam Wicked Power. T. Hübler (g,v) en O. Kast (d) zaten toen at de line-up. Vermilts deze vlag de lading nietdekte, volgde de naamsverandering eind ´93. het trio werd rond diezelfde periodeaangevuld met een bassist (J. Keller) zodat T. Gerstmann zich voortaan op gitaar kon toeleggen. Het motto van S.O.S. „ Hard-Stuff-Music-To-The-Core“ wijst al ann dat HC een fundament van hun geluid vormt, maar dat is bijlange niet alles. Van HC zondern franjes in korte, krachtige songs (“Lost in Korea”) gaat het over mengvormen (o.m. de funk/rap/core in “Love“) tot het merkwaardige „Why?”, waarin stampvoetende deat/grind met ballad-breaks gemengd wordt. Helaas... teveel variatie als U het mij vraagt!

Just as they did on their “Bitch” demo ( review #5) Sick of Society manages to attract your attention by putting some kind of erotic picture on the cover... As I wasen´t very enthusiastic about their first demo because of the childish attitude, I think Sick of Society sent me this tape to show they´ve grown up. On “Love!?” 13 tracks of hardcorish metal are presented, sometimes approching the deathrash genre. Fast, catchy, tight, and simplistic, but well arranged and rather good produced ( I think the guitars are sounding too raw). The vocal part varies from a forced scream to a death grunt. Variety as on their first demo, but more mature, more positiv.

German thrashy deathers SICK OF SOCIETY are back with a new demo, their 4th when I´m not mistaken, and a hell of a follow-up to their “Bitch”-tape! Definately an improvment as compared to its predecessors, “Love!?” contains 13 tracks, of which a few were also included on ”Bitch”. A cheerful combination of punk / hardcore influences and riffing in the veins of early Metallica, along with thrashy, and sometimes even deathy vocals makes this tape well worth listening to. Quite some refreshing ideas in the sea of cliché-type music, though there´s still room for improvment, even here... Anyway, check this band out, and get suprised by their music! Comes with pro-printed cover and studio-soundquality.

Depois da entrevista no outro n´ da zine aqui está a critica á demo, um pouco dificil de criticar, visto isto ser uma mistura de estilo, mas principalmente uma mistura de metal com hard core, no que resulta num som um pouce simples, vazio, mas com algum poder e agressividade , além de tudo tém alguma orginalidade, com capa a cores profissional, o melhor é mesmo ouvir…

Eine bizarre Mischung aus Hardcore, Grindcore, Metal, Punk, Oi! Und Tanzmusik bieten Sick of Society auf ihrem 4.Demo (2 davon unter dem Namen WICKED POWER) Ergebnis dieser Verschmelzung ist ein eigner, sehr unkommerzieller und weitab von jeglichem (Metal)-Trends liegender Stil. Das Demo kommt mit ansprechendem, gedrucktem Inlet aber acuh mit einer etwas tumben Produktion.



[No Compromise No.3 Germany ]
Dies ist bereits das vierte Demo dieser Band, die so ziemlich alles verwurstet, was es an harter Mucke gibt. Vom Hardcore-Punk über Powerthrash bis hin zum Deathmetal wird so ziemlich alles geboten. Auch vor funkigen Anklängen wird nicht halt gemacht. Trotz dieser stilistischen Vielfalt wirkt keiner der Songs zusammengeschustert, der Gesang erinnert teilweise an Sacred Reich, obwohl der Sänger auch schön Death Metal – mäßig grunzen kann, wie in „Why?“, meiner Meinung nach auch einer der besten Songs des Tapes. Insgesamt gibt es 13 Songs inklusive Intros, plus zwei Al Bundy Sampels. Das ganze gibt es dann für 12,- DM bei: Oliver Kast, Römer Straße 26, 89269 Vöhringen

Positiv überrascht war ich, als ich dem 95er Tape der SICKOS lauschte. Deutlich härter und metallischer ging man hier noch zu Werke. Dabei ist es schon überraschend, wieviele Stilrichtungen hier angeschnitten werden: Hardcore, Punk, Crossover, Death Metal, Thrash Metal... – alles zu finden auf diesem Demo! Wer auf rifflastige Musik steht (hauptsächlich Hardcore und Thrash), der kann sich dieses Tape mal reintun!

„Humilation“, der erste Track auf der B-Seite ist eine wirklich coole Nummer in bester Thrash-Manier. Fette Riffs und kraftvolles Drumming mit gut eingesetzter Double Bass am Ende des Songs. Für mich ist nur ein Schwachpunkt auszumachen und das ist der Gesang. Gegrunze, wie man das bei manch anderen Songs praktiziert, käme meiner Meinung nach auch hier besser. Ansonsten ist der Opener „Sick Of...“ hervorzuheben. Ziemlich flott geht´s ab und es macht Spaß, dem Gitarrengeschrubbe zuzuhören. Leider recht kurz die Nummer. Klaviertöne erklingen danach, bevor der nächste Song mit abgestoppten Riffs ertönt. Einige Tempowechsel machen diese Nummer aus. Soundmäßig gibt´s eigentlich nix auszusetzen, im Gegenteil: Der fette Gitarren- und Schlagzeugsound ist schon ein ganz schönes Brett...

Insgesamt klingt das Teil einfach roher als die letzten beiden CDs der Ulmer. Mir sagt das Ganze daher eher zu, doch Geschmäcker sind ja verschieden. Allerdings gefallen mir auch die extremeren Songs auf dem Tape besser und daher würde ich eine Aufnahme mit ausschließlich solchen Songs bevorzugen.

[Rock Hard 10 95 Germany ]
Nicht nur was ihren Bandnamen angeht, haben die vier Süddeutschen die Originalität nicht gerade mit Löffeln gefressen. Sick of Society klingen nach ´ner Band, die probiert, durch Einarbeitung von Neunziger-Jahre-HC und einigen HipHop-Elementen ihren Thrash Metal-Roots den entsprechenden Kick in Richtung Modernität zu verpassen. Vielleicht irre ich mich ja auch, aber die stilistischen Welten, die zwischen Songs wie dem HC-lastigen „ Sick of Society“ und der geilen Death-Grind-Viertelballade „Why?“ liegen, sprechen auf jeden Fall dafür. Das bringt einiges an Abwechslung in die elf Songs und macht das Tape zu ner angenehmen Sache, zeigt aber auch, dass Sick of Society noch etwas die Linie fehlt, die vonnöten ist, um ein Profil zu entwickeln, dass sie für Plattenfirmen interessant macht. Als Testballon geht “Love!?“ jedoch total in Ordnung.

Love!? markiert mittlerweile das vierte Demo der Bajuwaren. Klar, eine Steigerung ist zum Vorgängertape auszumachen. Jedoch gilt es die Vokabel Steigerung vorab zu relativieren oder besser, zu definieren. Was im Klartext heißt: Die Leute (Ottonormalverbraucher) assoziieren zu Steigerung flugs das Prädikat gut. Was im Fall S.O.S. mitnichten zutrifft. Bitch war schlicht weg scheiße und mit dem aktuellen Tonträger liegen sie auf der Wellenlänge unter Durchschnitt. Die Band hat sich in spielerischer Hinsicht zwar weiterentwickelt, was keinesfalls von den kompositorischen Mängeln hinwegtäuschen kann. Was zum einem an dem wahllosen Aneinanderreihen von Riffs / Ideen liegt, zum anderen an der Inkompetenz, Breaks wortwörtlich umgesetzt zu haben, sprich: dem Spielfluss den Wind aus den Segeln zu streichen. Die Grundessenz des Songmaterials basiert auf dem Deathmetal, wobei der mit diversen Trendextrakten vermengt wird. Tendenz steigend.



[Scream Fanzine No.2 ( 06 96) Germany]
What have we got here? When first listening to the two demos I thought I put in a compilation or a Zappa meets Metal tape. Sick of Society probably is a band having fun in putting various Metal influences together in some of the songs. You can recognize that the band is having fun playing everything in their rehearsal room. We´ve got real Brooklyn Crossover with Grindcorepunk, NWOBHM, Funk, Thrash, and Death Metalas well as some belching intros or Beavis & Butthead speeches mixed with lyrics from movies. The various vocals from Thomas and Thomas are interessting as well. Unfortunately there are no lyrics printed on the innersleeve of the tape. I´d like to know if the lyrics are as various as the vocals. P.S. Nice Love!? Cover, yes indeed!



[Steady Diet Newsletter (07 95) England]
Germany´s Sick of Society may be a great hardcore band with a sence of fun or just a bunch of guys who don´t express their violence with real seriousness. I think they´re the former, though one can question their values as judged by the cover on their new demo “Love”. Very much in the vein of the previous effort “Bitch”. Maybe they want us to question them. Anyway, this is a good time metallic rock done with energy and a don´t give a damn attitude. Very different from usual stuff in this genre. 11 songs over 35 min. Too! Check it out.

If nothing else, SOS are indead different. They play all the right on stuff- brutalhardcore, hardcore rap, and death metal but their minds are on things altogether not right on – you only have to look at the saucy sleeve photo to see we´re not talking straightedge here. Because they´ve so all over the place anly 75% of the music is any good but judge which 75%. Still, SOS have a lot to offer the metal underground so look out for ém. 11 big songs across 35 mins – like an LP.



[Subcide zine No.3 New Zealand]
The second demo from Germany´s hardcore thrash act S.O.S. “ Love!?” is almost too clean and crisp sounding in comparison to the low-fi rawness of “Bitch” the first demo. Almost to the point where it takes some of the feelcut of the music. This is still good though and definitely kicks the ass off most other stuff out there in the underground. Both in originality and song writing ability. It looks, from the amount of time (26/12/94 to 1/1/95) the band have spent working on this. “Love?!” could easily have been an album rather than a demo. What ever!? Check it out...



[The Ninth Cicle No.2 Scotland]
The first track is “ Sick Of...” seemingly fast punkish metalcore with Crowbar esque vocals. The second track “Fall In Love” is a complete contrast being a mellow piano piece. “Love” is another fast and furious track with grinding riffs. “It Can´t Work” is another refreshing suprise being in a funk metal style at the start before launching into the natural heavy style of the band. “Lost In Korea” is short sharp metalcore, whilst “Dark “Submarine” is an atmospheric piece like the name suggests. “Why” takes us back to the angry style of the band but with a change of vocal style, this is being more deathly. “Brainwashed” is a return to the Crowbar type vocals and the double bass really stands out on this track. “Humilation” again show tightdrum work with fast and furious guitars. “Freaks Of Nature” is quite catchy with some impressive tempo changes. “ Tribute To E” is another hardcore song in the style of Bad Religion. The penultimate track “Excession Of A Thought” is in the same vein as “Why” but with more melodic parts. “Contempt” is a ploddy thrashy style of Pantera but picks up pace towards the end. If you like angry sounding music then give this a listen.

Sick of society Almanya ´dan oldukca farkh bir grup. Bu grubun 4. demosu. Bir öncekine oranla cok daha iyi prodüksiyona sahip. Demoda 13 parca var. Bir de o kadar tür. Gercekten her parca degisik türde: Death, hardcore, punk, trash, rock... Grubun kendisine özgü bir tarzi yok. Bence esas sorun burda. Karman corman birsey olmus. Oli ve tayfasi buna “ Hard Stuff Music” diyor... Demo güzel bir kapaga sahip.
