“Als “HARD-STUFF-MUSIC to the core” beschreibt die aus dem Großraum Ulm stammende Combo Sick of Society ihr musikalisches Schaffen, das es nach einigen Demos nun auch auf einer eigenfinanzierten CD zu hören gibt. Eigentlich keine schlechte Definition, denn die vorliegenden gut zwanzig Minuten Musik decken so ziemlich alle Bereiche der “harten Musik” ab, von Knüppelpassagen über Trash-, Hardcore und Punkeinflüssen ist alles vorhanden. Nichts Neues unter der Sonne, doch kann Sänger (Mainvokillist...) Jaja, auch diese Veröffentlichung ist nicht mehr ganz so neu, soll hier aber trotzdem berücksichtigt werden. S.O.S. bieten auf der mir hier vorliegenden Scheibe 7 Songs lang eine Art Mischung aus Trash und einigen Teilen Crossover Kram. Als erstes fällt der geile Sound auf. Die CD wurde von Bastian Herzog (Fleshcrawl) produziert und der hat hier erstklassige Arbeit gemacht. Musikalisch hat mir die Band bei ihrem Auftritt in Nürtingen irgendwie besser gefallen. Die CD klingt für meine Meinung irgendwie nicht so spontan wie die Band es live tut. Trotzdem sind die Songs aber alles andere als schlecht, auch wenn ein wenig Speed hier und da nicht verkehrt wäre. Trotz allem eine Veröffentlichung, die Fans dieser Stilrichtung sicher gefallen wird.

Sick of Society from Germany sent me both recordings of their upcoming CD „Silicon Valley“ and their fourth demotape „Love?!”. I don´t like the recordings of their CD much, cause the music is trendy mixture of hardcore and metal with irritating vocals. But their demo “Love?!” ist really worth to listen, cause it´s an interessting combination of death, trash and Hardcore. Also the vocals vary from nromal shouts to deep grunts. By the way, on their CD is an additional vocal appereance by some members of Fleshcrawl.

Here we have a band that mixes all sorts aof styles of music (hardcore, trash, death, melodic rock, etc.) but still manages to make an album that actually sounds like its the same band playing each song. If you like your music mainly fast, energetic and even brutal but with the ability to change styles and time without jarring the ears, then this is something you should check out.

„hard stuff music to the core!“ Auf ihrer ersten CD nach vier Demo-Tapes spielen SOS coolen Hardcore mit vielen Einflüssen vor. Das heißt also, dass hier kein simples NYHC-Geschrote Marke Madball zu hören ist, sondern Musik mit Groove; allerdings limitiert man sich nicht selbst, sondern schielt auch nach anderen Stilen wie z.B. Punk, Death, Doom oder Trash, die man mit einfliesen lässt. Für Leute, die nicht immer unbedingt das volle Schwarzkittelgemetzel brauchen und sich auch auf einem Ryker´s-Konzert nicht zu doof vorkommen, ist diese CD sicher eine willkommene Abwechslung. Anspieltipps: die smoothe Fast-zwei-Minuten-Melodic-Punk Nummer “Rules/Dead“(mit Karibik/Reggae-Parts – Kult!) und das groovige “Tired“ (mit leichtem Doom-Feeling). “Silicon Valley“ gibt’s für DM 15,- bei Sick Of Society c/o Oliver Kast, Römer Straße 26, 89269 Vöhringen. Außerdem haben SOS noch ein Rehearsel – Tape Namens “Raw“ mit vier neuen Songs aufgenommen um damit die Zeit zur nächsten CD zu überbrücken. Dieses Quartett betreibt Stilvielfalt bis zur Klimax. Punk, Hardcore, Reggae, Trash, Death Metal – einmal kräftig gerührt, und fertig ist das Tal der künstlichen Rundungen. Bemerkenswert ist dabei die runde musikalische Darbietung, die gute Produktion und die Tatsache, dass der Sänger nach Phil Rind von Sacred Reich klingt. Einige gute Ansätze lassen mich ab und zu aufhorchen, aber insgesamt sind die 7 Stücke dieser 20-Minuten-CD für mich nicht greifbar und meist ziemlich öde.

Von Sick of Society habe ich ja schon eine ganze Menge Positives gehört. Umso mehr hat es mich überrascht, dass mich das Promo zur aktuellen 7 Song CD nicht gerade umhaut. S.O.S. versuchen zwar, ihren Hardcore Metal immer wieder durch Trash, Death oder andere Einflüsse aufzulockern, aber im großen und ganzen klingt die Scheibe trotzdem wie schon tausend Mal gehört. Der Gesang ist ebenfalls typisch. Tja, als positiv kannich eigentlich nur die druckvolle Produktion und den Preis von nur 15,- DM hervorheben.

Jaaaaaaa, das läuft runter wie Öl! Das deutsche Quartett legt nicht nur stilistisch ein weit reichendes Spektrum vor (vom Death Metal über Trash bis hin zu Hard- bzw. Melodic Core), sondern verfeinert ihre Songs immer wieder mit überraschenden, wahnwitzigen Ideen. Das Teil ist ein einziger mächtiger Arschtritt und langweilt zu keiner Sekunde. Deshalb ist es mir ziemlich unverständlich, wenn Leute der Metal – Presse ihnen vorwerfen, unfähig zu sein, sich auf einen Stil zu konzentrieren. Würde eindicker, fetter Major hinter der Band stehen, würden diese Leute wahrscheinlich etwas von „ungeahnten Variationsreichtum“, „verdammt Abwechslungsreich“ oder „erfrischender Crossover“ daherschleimen. Aber so… FUCK YOU!!! Diese 7 Track Cd gibt´s für DM 15,- bei Oliver Kast, Römer Strasse 26, 89269 Vöhringen, Germany

“Wer auf kraftvollen Hardcore meets Thrash/Death und Grind-Einflüssen abkann sollte sich durchaus den Namen SICK OF SOCIETY einprägen. Die 5. Veröffentlichung ist erstmals auf CD erschienen und präsentiert 7 Songs, welche in den gut 20 min. zu hören sind. Der typische Hardcore-Gesang wird mit abwechslungsreichen Gitarrenriffs und druckvollen Drumparts aufgelockert und entflieht somit aus dem Schatten einiger HC-Bands. Die MCD ist auch aufgrund des korrekten Preises von DM 15 (incl. P.+V.) recht empfehlenswert. Anspieltips: “Ru1es/Dead”, “I Hate” & “Silicon Valley”.

“7 songs, 20 minutes playing time, very good production and sound and sexy cover. They are back with a CD, finally, I've been waiting for this one to come. This is very cool, Hardcore with melodic yet fast parts. There's also guest appearance on vocals by Bastian Herzog (FLESHERAWL). I don't know why any label didn't took this release? It is good. Some news are in sample using and music writing is becoming more relaxed. Bass guitars and drums click in perfectly and more-part vocalist gives this band even better quality. Get this or get fucked! “Diese Band gefällt mir persönlich nicht besonders, weil die Stücke zumeist zu kurz sind und keine Melodien beinhalten, an die man sich in irgendeiner Weise erinnern kann. SICK OF SOCIETY packen zu viele Ideen in ihre Tracks und reihen diese meiner Meinung nach lieblos aneinander. Stilistisch legen sich die Jungs nicht fest und integrieren eigentlich sämtliche Spielarten des harten Rocks in ihren Sound, was einfach zu viel des Guten ist und im Endeffekt alles andere als kompakt klingt. Naja, wenn SICK OF SOCIETY in Zukunft imstande sind ihre Einfälle sorgfältiger anzuordnen und sie auch dementsprechend auszuarbeiten, könnte aus der Angelegenheit womöglich doch noch was werden.

Well, I know this CD is a litlle updated to be here but I think this release truly deserves a review. I know I´m not a total expert in music an I can´t always compare one band´s sound to another, but somehow I can create an image of the sound every bands portray by naming others or combining some. This CD sounds like a mix between Sacred Reich and maybe Suicidel Tendencies, so their music involves a lot of Trash and HC elements wisely mixed with a punk attidude. This is a good release for those who ( like I do ) still listen to some good old Trash Bands and like today´s HC.

“Ya, ya, ich hab’s ja schon immer gewußt, die Gesellschaft ist an allem schuld. Aber wieso eigentlich nicht, wenn man aus dieser Grundidee heraus sieben gelungene Songs basteln kann. Und dabei weigern sich SICK OF SOCIETY die ganze CD durch sich wie andere Bands im Metallbereich auf einen Stil festzulegen. Stattdessen schwanken sie zwischen Trash der frühen ‘90er, einzeln gestreuten Knüppelpassagen und scheuen sich auch nicht, einen Punksong zu machen, oder sogar einmal eine reggaeähnliche Passage einzubauen. Einziges Manko auf dieser CD sind die zum Teil sehr peinlichen Texte, die sich wie im Falle von “Fucked” eher wie ein billiger amerikanischer Schulhofpausenreim als wie ein ernstzunehmender Text anhören. Mit etwas mehr Orginalität in den Texten sollte in den nächsten Jahren von S.0.S. noch etwas zu hören sein. Die CD inkl. Porto/Verpackung & Sticker ist für 15 DM bei der obigen Adresse erhältlich.”

I have a problem SOS is a cool guys maybe but I don´t like their Hard Stuff Music. They try do be original ar possoblebut in my opinion this cd is nothing more than Pantera influenced from other hard bands too. Sorry but more personality ist need and more imagination ? 8 songs produced by Bastian Herzog from Fleshcrawl. Bastion also did some guest vocals on title song. I prefer nice dose of Lost in Korea.

Old band, formed in ´89 under „Wicked Power” name. The discography till now: “Last hours till immortality” d ´91, “The qustion of mankind” d ´92, “Bitch” d ´94, “Love?!” d ´95 and this selfinanced CD ´96. S.O.S. advertise the music like “still hard stuff & between all seats”. 7 Tracks here. Musically it´s nothing hard to classify, heavy trash..., well played, perfectly recorded but all in all the stuff not digging me up. Only 1 Track taked my attention called “Rules/Dead”, presented in melodic h/c vein. The rest is boring, simple post-trash, especially the vocs doesn´t fit to this music. Heard their previous demo “Love?!” where they played hardcore, they should keep that style I guess.

I´d say that the most enjoyable thing of this mini CD ist hat these germans are somewhat “refreshing“, considering how catchy their songs are. Basically they play trashcore with sporadic raids into other styles and, although not twisting to be truly original, the band succeeds in sounding even compelling at times. But (there´s always a “but”, he he ) I can´t see how those vocals could suite the music? No way! They haven´t an ounce of energy, almost listless, blah! But on the whole ”Silicon Valley” woths some bucks. Yo man. Hardcore, Punk Death oder Trash gefällig? Was Ihr wollt kriegt Ihr hier und nicht zu knapp! SOS zeigen uns mit Ihrem fetzigen Silberling “Silicon Valley“, dass Musik einfach Spaß machen kann, obendrein noch mit sinnvollen Texten versehen. Und dass eine Band durchaus in der Lage ist ihren eigenen Stil finden kann, obwohl sie sich zwischen alle (vorgewärmten) Stühle setzt. SOS ziehen ihr ding dermaßen sympathisch durch und schrecken dabei auch nicht vor karibisch anmutenden Reggaeparts zurück. Versehen jeden Ihrer Songs mit einem brachialen Groove. This German band made such a material in which are very different styles. Those who hear them at first think what a cacophony is this? I´m getting used to, that tuneful punk, progressiv Trash or grooving HC partsare all can be found in the tracks. But it´s just well duised conception. The point is that they combine the different elements skifully, though the music is a bit hardly-digestible, they did their work in a pro way. These 4 guys should get an extra reward for the catchy refrains. 8 Tracks in nearly 30 minutes. It´s a powerful album!

Na 4 demo´s, waarvan de laatste (Love?!) veel positieve reacties losmaakte in de underground ´zines, voelden de Duitsers van S.O.S. zich sterk genoeg om aan een CD te beginnen. Vermits geen enkel label interesse toonde moesten ze het zaakje in eigen beheer runnen: het resultaat werd deze mini met 7 tracks. Net zoals hun vorig werk is hun sound gekenmerkt door uiteenlopende stijlen. Nog steeds is HC een prominent ingredient, maar weer zit er een fikse hap death (inclusief de grunts) in. De brutaliteit wordt getemperd door einige frisse metal-riffs. Een occasionelle kalme break en een koppel reggae geinspireerde passages zorgen voor de gepolijste afwerking. Globaal gezien er echter meer stijlvastheid. Er wordt vocaal bijstand geleverd door 2 leden van Fleshcrawl, wiens Bastian Herzog ook de produktie in handen had.

New from German-based hardstuff pioneers SICK OF SOCIETY is this tape, only meant for promotion and therefore not for Sale! The Cd-Version will be released in due time, so fans should wait a while longer! Also included on this tape is the bands last demo to date “Love?!”, which music I once described as a cheerful combination of punk/hardcore influences and riffing in the veins of early Metallica, along with trashy, and sometimes even deathy vocals. The new material is more staight forward trash, heavy and tight, in the veins of a band like Sacred Reich, especially so in the vocals-area. But, the bands early hardcore and groovy influences are also still here, coz at times you can hear bands like Dog Eat Dog or even Sick Of It All sipping through. So, all in all the band´s still improving with every new release, and I think they´re gradually getting at waht they want their own music to be: funky, trashy, powerful, melodic...hard stuff!

Nur soviel: Silicon Valley ist ein ganzes Stück besser als das Demo geworden, das mag am guten Sound ligen, aber auch an den Liedern, die kompakter geworden sind, ohne die spezifische Wildheit, Eigenständigkeit und unkommerzialität zu verlieren

The band´s name can be mislead you. Indead you can think that Sick of Society is a Punk/Hardcore band but even if these mentionned styles are sometimes present (ina more or less neat manner in the musicbut all above the lyrics) it would be false and simplistic to confine to a nichethat is not inevitably theirs and does not give the possibility to present their music to more various audience but nevertheless fans powerful metal because that´s the best definition of their music.
A music for fans able of eclectism cause you can find here: Biohazard enmostyle atmospheres (piano intros, murmured voices, heartbeat...) Trash/death influences (drums, voice), Punk influences (simple and effivient guitar riffs, fast tempo) new school hardcore (like Nerauder), Rap (spoken Voice on “Love?!) there is even a Ska passageand an another with a wah-wah...
The whole is however energic and powerful and must be realyy great “live“. A good music not really original but this band deserves to be supported cause these guys seem to be animated by passion and sincerity.

I must admit hardcore bands are often perdictable. I love most of ´em but I wouldn´t stay trapped in that genre without listening to something else. Despites their positive messages, they´re not always open-minded concerning other genres of music, especially Metal. Thus, when you get an open-minden hardcore band, it takes more time to get into it and you keep wondering: Are they a hardcore band, actually??!”! That´s the case with Sick of Society who enclose lotsa different influences in their music which is first, a bit baffling. Their 4th demo “Love?!” is sufficiently diversified (13 Songs) to understand... it´s impossible to put ´em a precise label! Prevailingare, of course, Hardcore & Trash (old school) but S.O.S. have a thrown a lot of different stuff in it resulting on so many different tracks... there even is a Death/Grind song! From time to time, vocals remind me a bit of Sacred Reich which is also the case on their 7 songs CD “Silicon Valley”. The CD shows a natural evolution of the band without a major changes in the songwriting direction (but it´s so diversified, I can really tell!). “Silicon Valley” display S.O.S. abilities to write their unique Trash/Core with even some Punk Rock touches (“Rules/Dead”) while my girlfriend gets out of the lavatories telling me she likes the shit she heard (no joke here!) which is quite unusual with stuff I usually review! Thus, no need to describe all the oddities in depth, it´s up to you, this is different without lacking of heaviness. Cool Band!

[Shocker No.4 France]
Autour d´une base Hardcore, Sick of Society nous emméne vers tout un panel d´ambianceset de rythmes diversifiés ( Reggae, acousiques, purement Hardcore voire Grind) mais yui n´en conservepas pourle moins un ensemble trés cohérent. Ce Silcon Valley est bourrin á souhait et trés brut. N´attendez pas de ces allemands un Metal convenu mais plutot frais oú la suprise est de tous les instants.

Ja endlich haben Sick of Society es geschafft eine CD aufzunehmen. Zwar ist dies noch eine Eigenproduktion, doch wenn die Reaktionen so positiv bleiben, könnten sie bald einen Vertrag in der Tasche haben. Sick of Society sind dem Treu geblieben was sie bereits auf ihrem „Love?!“ Tape spielten. Schlichten aber abwechslungsreichen Hardcore. Nicht dieser Trend-Müll, den jede große Hardcore Band spielt, sondern ihr ganz eigenes Ding. Und zwar melodischer Hardcore mit leichten NYHC-Einflüssen (stört aber nicht weiter), das ganze mit Zeugs wie ältere Bad Religion gemischt und dazu eine kleine Brise Death und Trash Metal. Heraus kamen gute Abgehlieder, gemischt Midtempo bis Doom Songs. Das einzige, was nervig ist, ist die Vorliebe des Sängers für die Wörter FUCK oder MUTHERFUCKER, … Antesten könnt Ihr die Cd für 15,- DM bei Oliver Kast, Römer Strasse 26, 89269 Vöhringen


[The Underground Review – Sep. Oct. 1996 – Canada]
“My German friends of SICK OF SOCIETY are back on the scene with their first demo CD following several tapes with delightful titles like “Love?” and the wonderfully-titled “Bitch”. “Silicon Valley” is the title of the newie and if, for some reason, you just concluded that the band have calmed down, then take a look at the cover - -ehm! On the musical front, despite the presence of some metal and industrial influences, S.O.S. essentially deliver the kind of mix popularly known as crossover. In fact, it is rather reminiscent of PRONG, PRO-PAIN, et al. The vocals on opener “Eulogy for the Past” closely resemble Phil Rind of SACRED REICH, whereas elsewhere they adopt a different tone. There is a rare, and lonely, solo on “Rules/Dead” which along with the occasional higher guitar notes signifies how the band are better off with the incorporation of both these elements. Yet my favourite track does not appear until towards the end when “Hypocrists” pounding attack assails out of the speakers - pretty heavy! Hats also off to Basti Herzog of FLESHCRAWL for an engineering job well done.

Sick of Society, a band that is not comparable to any other one. Their style is a blend of all kinds of hard music like Death, Rock, Grind, Trash, Heavy, Punk, Hardcore... I can see that you´re very sceptical after reading such a description but that´s true and moreover, I´d add in spite of this large variety, not a song sounds incoherent! Well arrenged, well produced, energetic, aggressiv, straight, a “in your face” attitude, a good packaging, a cool Cover (Hey,who´s that girl? Hehe...) are the very positive points of this CD... The bad points? Sorry no bad points!

Da bekomme ich (nach längerer Zeit) wieder einmal eine selbstproduzierte cd zum kritisieren oder auch gutachten. Na und? nach den ersten tönen denke ich zwar nach bei shouts wie „jump around“ an so ne neuartige Kidformation, doch mit dem Rest des Tracks und der gesamten cd, stellt sich diese Behauptung ganz entgegen. Nach enormen lauten aufdrehen ist der 2te Gedanke „äh – das ist ja geil“ ähnlich vom garage-sound der Metallica 5 Dollar EP. Ehrlich… und als ich mit dem Drummer kurz darüber sprach, sagte er diesen Vergleich noch nie gehört habe, ich nagelte ihm aber gleich im Nacken, das er es als Lob ansehen solle… nun den, S.O.S. werden bei anhaltendem Sound- und Songwriting sicherlich ihren Weg gehen und ehrlich… es ist geil wie Metallica´s 5 Dollar-Ding, schnell aggressiv und irgendwie independent. Jedoch handelt es sich nicht um Coverversionen. Diese Rille sollten alle gesunden Metalfreaks mal gehört haben!
